I don't really think it's the best but I guess it's good seeing as how it's free and all.

What could we do to improve?

Whats sad is my last host charged $50/yr for 8GB(storage)/800MB(transfer)

Only had 3 MySQL(they claimed 5, but only 3 were available at any time), limited domains(I think 5)

ULMB is my favorite so far

live4eve

3 MySQL databases is good for free 2mb upload isnt the best but you know. And this host MySQL databases work unlike other ones ive tried

Tyler
03-07-2007, 08:12 PM
The only thing that is different about our MySQL is that we have it on another server so it is faster, free, and high quality. Other then setting the hostname as mysql instead of localhost it shouldnt be different.

live4eve

that was was a good idea by putting it on a diffrent server good thinking

@Tyler about what to improve.

Actually nothing really. The free service is just fine. The paid service isn't as great, but as a free host it's ok here. I've seen other free hosts that offer more than ULMB. That's why I'm not saying ULMB is the best, but it's pretty alright by me.

Tyler

If there isn't anything to improve then we must be the best, otherwise there is no such thing as the best.

What are you looking for in a paid service?

@Tyler

Well what I'm saying is that as a free host it's ok here. I've seen better I've seen worst. What the better one's offer are CPanel, more databases, fantastico, no file size or type limits (so that means you can have .htaccess), etc.

They offer pretty much what you want in a paid host but for free. The only thing they require you to do is post in their forums (and that's just so you can upgrade your account and get MORE than what's in the basic starter version.)

As for being a paid host here I don't think it's the best or near that for that matter. For one thing you still have file restrictions on paying members. For what you're charging, other hosts give you a domain for free aswell and there are no file restrictions of course.

My overall scores on things around here:

As a free host a 7.5/10. - You guys offer some good stuff, but the ads really messed it up for many of the members. Other free hosts (the one I mentioned above) don't add in their ads onto your site. Besides, a 7.5 isn't bad, it's a little above "Ok".

As a paid host I give it a 6 or 5/10. Just doesn't seem like this place was ready for being a paid host. If you don't know what I'm talking about, look at other paid hosts, see what they offer and try to beat them. I don't just mean on file restrictions, but I mean on the features built in. Some hosts offer CPanel (even the free host mentioned above has it) and it's a really good panel I guess :p lol

Anyways, that's about my thoughts on this.

@wwe
There are no file restrictions for paid hosting members, and no file size limits.

The problem with cPanel and the reason we dont offer it is because it slows down the server, you can't host very many people on a cPanel server, but with our control panel that has many of the same functions as cPanel, we can host alot more sites and on multiple servers, with one control panel. We have to place ads on your site to stay here, free hosts that don't put ads on your site don't last long. If they did, then no free hosts would put ads on your site.

wwe

So you allow .htaccess and well any other filetype to be uploaded for paying members? Well then I take that back I guess. I thought you didn't allow it but oh well.

But like I said, the hosting here is ok. It's not the best but it's alright. The other host I know offers cPanel and has loads of members it's hosting. It's free aswell and has no forced ads on your site. As for them not being on long enough because of the whole "no ads" thing, we'll just see how long they last :)

On the subject of your hosting panel, I'd suggest adding some more features to it. I don't mind not having the real cPanel deal, but the panel definately lacks some things. For example, useful tools like redirect manager and a more user-friendly files manager ( my personal opinion is that a good file manager lets the user select multiple files to manipulate ). I guess overall it would be nice if it was more "cPanel-like" with regards to what you can do with it, rather than looks. Having all the links in the control panel working would be nice too.

Also, It would be nice to have a script installer. I hope I don't look like I'm asking for too much, but things like this are what most people look for, and there isn't much else to improve with you guys!

.htaccess will NEVER be allowed. never ever ever. please stop asking.

Try to find a free host offering cpanel which has no ads and has been in business over one year, you wont find any. reason: they find out sooner or later that cpanel sucks when you try to have more then 700-1000 accounts, and 1000 free accounts doesnt pay for a server.

Tyler

I am working on a script installer, the only problem we run into is upgrading the scripts. Thats where it gets complicated.

I like:
° The speed
° Support (admin really active).
° Ads allowed(free account)
° Space & Bandwith(free account) but who use that??? 1% maybe

Dont like:
° Popup (free account). Full page, bad stuff offer... ouf! that crazy
° Stats, people like seeing details.
° Can't change username for my croix101.ulmb... and tell me if i have no reason but in starter package it's 4 domains + your username.ulmb... not 5 domains.

Ideas:
° Use your 404 page a bit more, sell something or anything, i dont know how many request you have for your 404 page by day but...
° Negotiate for open the popup behind the front page.

I dont know why u say "1000 free accounts doesnt pay for a server".
The problem is not to get high traffic and targeted pub for each sites?

A question:
° Why this name "UnlimitedMB" if only "no file size limit" in pay service are unlimited. Just a question lol

If you read my post, I was asking about PAYING members. And so I guess I'd give this a 5/10.
And I already know of a host that is free and offers everything I've stated.

By the way, if you guys want some more ideas for features you could try offereing more MySQL DBs, or giving ways for members to earn such things. I'm not saying post4host, but there has to be some way that you guys can think of.

I agree. Some of the pop-ups are out of control. Full pages and many of them using spyware and adware. I thought you had mentioned they were only supposed to popup once per page every thirty minutes or so. That isn't the case with me.

arenlor
03-12-2007, 09:39 PM
About the popups, I did some minor research, the thing they are using is what the problem is, not them. So it's not anything they can solve. But yes that is a good idea to allow us to earn things somehow. Also, if you could allow sites like aboutus.org and whois.domaintools.com to access our sites that'd be good too.

wwe
03-13-2007, 12:57 AM
Maybe just change the Ad formats.....that's all that's really dragging this site down. The pop-ups/unders....

How are the other ad formats coming along? (You guys said you were looking into other ad formats for sites so users can choose.) Currently I don't even have a site here because of the pop-ups...

outpost
03-14-2007, 06:27 PM
Yes I agree. Change to banners or something. If you do, please remember to give the ad-code. Other hosts use automated ad scripts that often break pages.

Tyler
03-14-2007, 07:00 PM
The way we will do it is have you put a piece of code on your page (like a comment or something) then we will enter the banner code right after that. As long as it is in the top XXX pixels of the web site (which will be published later when the plan is finalized) If you dont have it on your site and you pick the banner option then we will place it at the top of your web page (probably right after the <body> tag.)

arenlor

Will we be able to format it, like center it etc?

UnlimitedMB

yes .

outpost
03-16-2007, 04:18 PM
But is this code automatically placed? I personally would rather be able to add it myself, that way it fits in more with my site. I would still keep it up near the top as you guys said.
