This is a little different from what I'm used to, so I'm wondering how I might upload/install a forum of any kind.

upload the extracted files, and run something like install.php , or if its phpbb, you would go to /install/index.php or /install/install.php
There's usually installation instructions in there somewhere...

just my 2 cents try phpbb. it's free and there is a really good hack for phpbb that totally blocks spam bots from joining. I am also using ipboards and I wish it was a new forum cause i'd ditch it and replace with the hacked version of phpbb as the spam bot blocker blocks all bots that try and join and woks fabulous. Here is the link for phpbb and the hack which you have to hack yourself.

Here is my forum which has the hack installed in it. If you scroll to bottom you'll see it has a counter showing how well it's working. Also if you try and register you'll see a question in the registration form that is the bot blocker. It's a randomly asked question and bots haven't a clue and the answer is always rotated so bots can't just select a certain answer and get it right. We have it installed on one forum and since installing it over a month ago no spammers joined and had about 130 blocks so far works great!!!

I know of phpbb yes, easily moddable, but seen it too much, just not my thing, would most likely upload vbulletin or ipb, not sure which one my friend bought lol.
EDIT: My friend bought a vbulletin it seems, I tried uploading it, didn't work, like 2 things needed an extension, but even if put extensions, like 3 others where not allowed to upload, the extensions wern't allowed or something...

Ignore files which are not allowed and continue with the installation as normal.

Well current IPB isn't free any longer. While I understand the feeling about a specific software you might consider though spammers. I have seen ALOT of spammers joining and if the forum doesn't have spam control (that lousy image in registration form doesn't work either as I have that active on my IPB forum and it fails. But if the forum doesn't have tough spam control spammers are joining alot of forums lately. The hack I gave above has stopped them dead in their tracks. So...

I can get any mod for any forum software, that's no issue.
