All shoutboxes are banned, regardless of their refresh rate. The best alternative at this point in time is remotely hosting it.

So there is no shoutboxes of anykind? because on my SMF i have Tinyportal that comes with a shoutbox.
I believe it says "Any PHP based chat room or shoutbox" which is the same thing as no shoutboxes of anykind, just in different words.

I should clarify no shoutboxes are allowed if they are hosted here, manual or auto refresh.
I was simply saying that if you are auto refreshing a page on the server you are most likely going to have problems.

The script to display a status message should be fine.

Shoutcast status is not really banned, but it probably wont work either, you can only connect to port 80.

Just wondering, is it okay to link to a shoutbox, like Chatango and let it be working on a different site or a host elsewhere?

Tyler
04-13-2009, 02:04 AM
As long as it is not hosted here, and the page that you link to it on does not auto refresh you will be fine.

Some forum scripts include mass email. Does that mean they cannot be used either?

UnlimitedMB

Its fine as long as you don't use the mass mailing functions.

nevermind.... looking over the requirements for the flash terminal emulator, it is probably something that you wouldn't like due to socket and port things

in investigating various packages that i want to use as my site template, I came across a package called ocportal. it comes with a chat and shoutbox portion and i am investigating ways to disable them. I am wondering if I use it and don't link to these things or use the shoutbox, could i put it on my site

Shoutboxes are very resource intensive because web site viewers often times open up 5 - 10 tabs of the same web site that auto refreshes every few seconds. When this is multiplied by the number of people who are doing this on your web site it becomes an abusive script and can bring down a server.
This is outlined in our terms of service as an abusive script and is against the rules.

I just want to make sure, is it okay to have a flash chatroom? I mean it's only on one HTML page (you probably knew that, but I'm new to this!)
Thanks!

If its just a html page yes.
I assume its some chat service that gives you a chatbox hosted by them and you put the html code on your page.

It doesn't use our server resources so its fine.

Would this rule count for an auto-refresh cbox?

Well, I read in previous posts that even if it wasn't hosted that it couldn't be auto. So I was a bit skeptical. :)

some of these rules make me :(
Why are we allowed forums which are technically shout-boxes but not shout-boxes hosted here.

If only people can read :) Shout boxes are nowhere near the same as a forum.
