Se Friendly URL

OK I have the option have SE Friendly URL's but i had to turn this off as i do not have access to mod_rewrite because i am a free user of this website so i am told.
Therefore my posts are appearing as: ?id=x
Is there anyway i can change this to text of my choice, maybe by going into phpMyAdmin, or adding a function to my blog script?

So is there anyway of getting an SE friendly url without mod_rewrite?

Search Engines dont really care about the ?id=x thing anymore, they are sophisticated enough to know how to index them.

OK many thanks for the reassurance i guess i better start creating content and stop worrying about irrelevant matters, again thanks for the advice.
