Are you on a free account? If so, you can't upload anything over 2MB.
You may also need to extract the zip on your computer, then continue by uploading the files over FTP.
strange. i remember having no problem uploading joomla a few weeks ago. it wasn't file by file.
edit - i split it up into 4 zips. One zip is 700KB which gives error opening zip.

Can you upload to your webspace or link to the zip which shows error so we can test it.

mysql is the host name. Check out the sticky in this topic for help installing with MySQL settings.
Last thing. I activated SEF URLs in Joomla 1.0. Now my links give 404 errors. It asked to rename htaccess.txt to .htaccess. I had Joomla 1.5 recently, I activated SEF and I ignored the renaming message and it worked fine.
Do you know anything I can do?

Disable SEF.
Apart from that obviously.

You can upgrade your account to enable htaccess, other then that there is no other way.
Ok, I just don't understand why SEF in Joomla would work for me a few weeks ago. The only thing I see is that I had Joomla 1.5 then and I have 1.0 now.

well your obviouly going to loose features by downgrading.
is there a reason you did this?
I removed Joomla to start fresh again because some things went wrong as I was getting familiar with it. I tried version 1.0 instead this time since it seems to be still popular. I suppose I could upgrade to 1.5 again.

Its generally a bad idea to use old versions of software.
Always use the latest version, especially if your starting from scratch.
Theres no point in learning an old version that will eventually be discontinued and you will be forced to upgrade due to security bugs that wont be fixed in old version.
