configuration.php-dist is the config file! Joomla won't even install without that file.

That is a sample file, its not required.

I have installed joomla at http://eric.ulmb.com/joomla/index.php
I extracted Joomla_1.0.10-Stable-Full_Package.zip to my pc and uploaded the files with ftp.
The files shown above in azx's post did not upload, installer also complained about zlib and sessions but the script installed and works perfectly without any errors.

Make sure you select the option NOT to chmod anything and use server defaults.

Zlib is used to compress the output, we disable this module because we have set our webserver to automatically compress everything anyway. Double compression would corrupt the output. So this way is better and also faster :)
Either way.. it wont effect the operation of the script, compression only saves bandwidth use, not functionality.
